My grandma just turned 102 years old. It’s incredible to see how much lust for life she still has, even at 102. Every time I spend time with her I leave inspired.
My grandmother is considered a Superager.
Here are the 6 reasons why I think she’s alive and loving life:
1. Mindset
My grandma is the kindest and most caring person you’ll ever meet. She doesn’t let anything bother her, and I’ve never seen her angry.
She’s also fully present; she lives in the moment. When I asked what she thought about being 102, she said she didn’t think about it. It’s not like this has been a goal of her. I believe her positive attitude and growth mindset have been key to her longevity.
2. Social
She never turns down spending quality time with her friends and family. You can see the energy she gets from hanging out with her people. She makes connection a priority.
3. Nutrition
She’s always eaten slowly and “watched her figure.” Although she likes sweets, she controls her intake and has consistently maintained a healthy body composition.
4. Exercise
She did a lot of cross-country skiing, swam, and would go on long walks when she lived on the lake. When she got into her retirement home, that’s when she started doing some strength and aerobics.
5. Environment
She spent most of her retirement living in nature by the lake and spending a lot of time outside. Getting lots of sunshine and having a healthy environment to live in is an essential element to staying healthy.
6. Genetics
Experts suggest that your longevity is approximately 30% genes, 70% lifestyle choices.
My grandma has some great genes. Her mom passed at 94, one sister at 94 and another at 97.

My grandma didn’t do any of these things on purpose.
Peter Attia has popularized the centenarian decathlon, which is training to be as strong and healthy as possible in the last 10 years of your life, but my grandma didn’t have that goal.
The real secret to living past 100?
My grandma would tell you that she loves her life and does what she feels best for her health and body.
